ELK are one of the largest species within the deer family. The North American elk is considered the same species as the red deer of Europe. The antlers alone can weigh 10 pounds each and can be 3 to 4 feet in height. They tend to be deep, rich brown hues and are relatively symmetrical in size and shape. Antlers can be stained to enhance color.

BISON are more massively built compared to cattle, with a larger skull that has a broad triangular shape when viewed from above.  Horns are smaller in size and consistent in shape and color, which is a deep black. Like the cattle, the horns will be permanently fixed to the skull and are also sanded and oiled prior to the floral arrangement.

CATTLE / STEER skulls are the same general size and shape. The skulls are quite large with a more rectangular shape when viewed from above. However the horns can be vastly different in size, shape and color depending on the breed. I prefer to use the smaller horns that curve upward to provide a more rounded base for the flowers, although I'm always up for a challenge! All horns are permanently adhered to the skull and are sanded and oiled to bring out the natural colors before flowers are attached

LARGE DEER typically have curly antlers with points extending out on the same side and in the same direction on each antler. Some can be wider-set with a more square shape (seen here) or taller, with more of a rectangular shape. Overall height and width of the skull and antlers together can range between 17 to 20 inches. As with any of the deer, if the nasal bone is in tact, it can be removed upon request. Stains can be added to the antlers to enhance the color.
